Trump Peace Plan (Credit: OpenAI)
International News: As the Russia–Ukraine war enters its fourth year, US President Donald Trump has put forward a new peace plan aimed at ending the conflict. According to a US official quoted by CNN, Ukraine has agreed in principle. This statement came after high-level talks held in Abu Dhabi involving Russian delegates. A Ukrainian delegation was also present during these discussions. The development has sparked global interest and diplomatic debate.
The US official claimed that Ukraine had accepted the proposal and only minor details remain unresolved. He stated that the agreement could lead to a ceasefire if all terms are finalised. The talks were led by the US Army Secretary, who met Russian officials to explore settlement options. The US hopes the deal could shift the war towards diplomatic resolution. However, Ukraine has avoided giving full confirmation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contradicted the US claim through a post on X. He said that although opportunities for peace have been identified after the Geneva meeting, significant work still lies ahead. Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine cannot compromise on national dignity or core interests. He warned that rushing into an agreement could weaken his country’s strategic position. His remarks reflect caution rather than refusal.
Zelensky said Ukraine faces a delicate situation, balancing between losing national honour and potentially weakening ties with the United States. He insisted that any agreement must make Ukraine stronger, not more vulnerable. The President stressed that real peace needs comprehensive guarantees. He highlighted that support from international partners, especially the US, remains essential. This explains his reluctance to fully endorse the proposal.
Reports suggest the 28-point proposal includes Ukraine relinquishing control of the Donbas region. It also asks Ukraine to reduce military strength and withdraw its NATO ambitions. Under the plan, the US could recognise Crimea as official Russian territory. However, Ukraine has repeatedly rejected such demands in the past. Zelensky has previously called these conditions a “red line” that cannot be crossed.
Analysts say the plan appears to favour Russia significantly, making Ukrainian approval unlikely. Past negotiations also collapsed due to similar demands from Moscow. Trump’s strategy reportedly aims to fast-track conflict resolution, but critics say it risks long-term instability. Ukrainian officials remain sceptical of concessions without security guarantees. Experts believe meaningful agreement is still far from reality.
Talks between the United States, Ukraine and Russia are expected to continue in the coming weeks. Global powers are closely watching for signs of diplomatic movement. Zelensky has confirmed continued engagement with all allies while safeguarding national interests. Final approval seems unlikely unless major conditions are amended. The world now waits to see whether diplomacy or conflict prevails.
