Israel’s Iron Dome system is renowned worldwide for its ability to intercept and destroy enemy missiles mid-air. Additionally, it has the ability to stop drone attacks before they reach their targets. However, now an Islamic country, Turkey, is reportedly working on an even more advanced technology — the Steel Dome.
Recently, a NATO summit was held, where all member countries accepted a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to this proposal, all NATO members, including Turkey, will now spend 5% of their GDP on defence. In line with this, Turkey has announced that it will strengthen and expand its Steel Dome air defense system.
Turkey has stated that the entire landmass of the country — and even its surrounding seas — will be covered under the Steel Dome. Experts claim that while the Iron Dome provides basic-level protection, Turkey’s Steel Dome is a multi-layered air defence system. It includes advanced sensors and integrated weapons systems. According to Turkish authorities, the Steel Dome is a "system of systems" that offers real-time security coverage. It activates based on inputs received through artificial intelligence and can intercept enemy missiles mid-air. Its standout feature is that it provides coverage over both land and sea.
This means that if an enemy attempts to launch an attack via the sea, the Steel Dome will still be able to intercept and neutralize it. At present, it has been deployed at key locations in Turkey, including the capital Ankara and the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Turkey has stated that it plans to implement this method across the country. The decision to begin deploying the Steel Dome was made in August last year.
Israel's Iron Dome has made it significantly harder for groups like Hamas or countries like Iran to attack Israel, as it can shoot down incoming missiles in the air. Turkey has now accelerated efforts to develop its Steel Dome system. According to reports, it has both long-range and short-range missiles in addition to intercepting equipment. These components allow the system to neutralize enemy attacks before they reach Turkish territory.
