Kyiv: Ukraine is struggling with economic pressure amid its long-running war with Russia. The war has had a huge impact on the country's economy and the government also faces the challenge of raising military expenses. At such a time, a Ukrainian MP has given a suggestion to increase the revenue, which has attracted everyone's attention. The MP has demanded legal recognition of pornography and adult entertainment industry in the country.

Why did the MP demand to legalise the porn industry?

Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament, Yaroslav Zelezniak, has introduced a bill in this regard. He says that if the porn industry is given legal status in the country and tax is imposed on it, then the government can earn substantial additional income.

According to the report, the MP estimates that this move could generate tax revenue of around 25 million dollars. He claims that with this amount Ukraine can buy about 30 thousand drones or other military equipment for the war.

Is the adult industry already running in Ukraine?

Adult content activities have long existed in Ukraine, but the production, distribution, and marketing of pornography are prohibited under existing laws. There is a provision of jail and fine for violating the rules.

The MP argues that despite the ban on the industry, these activities have not ended completely. In such a situation, the government should consider controlling it and bringing it under the tax net.

Were MPs also raised the issue of harassment of artists?

Zelezniak says that the current system creates an awkward situation for people creating adult content. If they do not pay taxes they may face legal action and if they try to pay taxes they may be charged with violating pornography laws.

He claims that by getting legal status for the industry, the government will get revenue and content creators will also get legal protection.

What is the stance of the Zelensky government?

Voice is also being raised on this issue by adult content creators and their representatives. Some people say that it is not appropriate to use government resources in such matters during war.

At the same time, a petition regarding this issue has also reached the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to reports, the related online petition has received support from thousands of people. Amidst the growing discussion, Zelensky has indicated that Parliament will consider this proposal.

At present it is not clear whether the bill will get final approval in Parliament or not. However, this proposal to increase revenue amid the war with Russia has definitely sparked a new debate in Ukraine.
