Washington: An American statement regarding the Golan Heights has sparked a new debate in the politics of West Asia. US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack has said that Israel is still in possession of the Golan Heights. His statement is being considered different from the current policy of America, under which in 2019, President Donald Trump had recognised Israel's sovereignty over this area.

After the controversy escalated, Barrack clarified on Sunday that there has been no change in America's policy. He said his statement was misinterpreted.

What did Barrack say about Golan Heights?

In fact, Barrack had mentioned the Golan Heights in an interview given to Lebanese-Australian businessman and journalist Mario Naufal. He had said that Israel is occupying this area and this is against the resolutions of the United Nations.

Why is the Golan Heights such an important area?

The Golan Heights is a strategic area of Syria, which Israel captured during the 1967 war. After this, in 1981, Israel decided to include it in its territory, but most countries including the United Nations did not recognise this occupation.

What decision did the Trump administration take in 2019?

In 2019, the US president Donald Trump recognised Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This decision was considered a big change from America's old policy and there was a reaction to it at the international level as well.

Now after Tom Barrack's latest statement, the question arose whether America is retreating from its old policy. However, Barrack later rejected such speculations.

What did Barrack say in clarification?

As the controversy escalated, Barrack clarified his views on social media platform X. He said his statement was not meant to endorse the UN's position. He reiterated that there has been no change in the US policy regarding the Golan Heights decided by the Trump administration in 2019.

Why are there differences between America and Israel on many issues?

Amid the dispute over the Golan Heights, there have been reports of differences between America and Israel on other issues as well. Barrack had also mentioned the situation in Syria in his interview. He said that action was taken to prevent Turkey from establishing a military presence there.

However, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz disagreed with some of Barak's statements. Katz said Israel would not accept Turkey's military presence in Syria, which would threaten its security.

What did Barrack say about Hezbollah also?

Tom Barrack was also in the news for another statement, in which, while referring to the Israel-Lebanon issue, he said that Hezbollah and Iran are present at the negotiating table. He also said that efforts are being made for talks between the two sides.

It is clear from these statements of Barrack's that tension and diplomatic differences still remain in West Asia on issues like Golan Heights, Syria, Lebanon and Hezbollah.
