US Wanted Europe to Impose Sanctions on India and China Over Russian Oil, Trump's Treasury Chief Reveals (Instagram)
Washington: A big revelation has come to light regarding America's efforts to impose sanctions on India and China on the issue of buying oil from Russia. US President Donald Trump's administration had appealed to European countries to impose additional sanctions on India and China buying oil from Russia, but European allies refused to support the proposal. America's Finance Minister Scott Besant has revealed this. Questioning the policy of European countries, he said that while America is trying to put pressure on Russia, its allies continue to buy Russian energy.
US Finance Minister Scott Besant told during a conversation in NBC's program 'Meet the Press' that America wanted European countries to impose secondary sanctions on India and China to buy oil from Russia. However, the European allies did not accept this proposal.
Besant raised the question that when America is taking steps to put pressure on Russia, then why are European countries holding back from doing so. He said European countries had also eased restrictions imposed on the purchase of Russian diesel and jet fuel in May.
Scott Besant accused European countries of adopting a dual policy. According to him, on the one hand, European countries talk about supporting Ukraine, while on the other hand, they indirectly help its economy by buying energy from Russia.
Besant said that European countries are providing economic resources to Russia and President Vladimir Putin to continue the war against Ukraine. He also mentioned the difference between America and Europe in purchasing energy from Russia.
According to the US Finance Minister, America imports limited Russian products, while the imports from European countries are much more. He questioned European colleagues regarding this situation.
The US has decided to impose a temporary pause of 60 days to assess the impact of the exemption in tariffs imposed on imports from Russia and some other countries. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Finance Minister Scott Besant gave information about this decision.
According to Besant, President Trump's executive order gives a relaxation of 60 days under the 'Graham Act'. During this time, the administration wants to assess what impact the imposition of sanctions and tariffs has on the global economy and the US economy.
However, he clarified that this does not mean that all sanctions imposed on Russia have been permanently lifted.
President Donald Trump defended his decision Friday at the Mar-a-Lago resort near Miami. He said that this step can prove to be good for both America and the world.
However, political opposition has also emerged in America regarding this decision of Trump. Some lawmakers from the Republican and Democratic parties have raised questions on this step.
Procurement of crude oil from Russia is an important issue related to India's energy needs. India imports a large part of its needs from abroad and changes in oil prices can have an impact on the domestic economy as well.
The efforts by America to impose additional sanctions on India and the stance of European countries make it clear that there is no complete consensus among western countries regarding energy trade with Russia.
At present, the refusal of European countries regarding the proposed secondary sanctions on India and China is important in this development. This has exposed differences between the US strategy and its allies to put pressure on Russia's oil trade.
