US Issues Terror Threat In Karachi (Social Media)
International News: The United States has imposed a temporary restriction on its diplomats and staff visiting upscale hotels in Karachi, Pakistan, after receiving intelligence about a potential security threat. On Friday, the US State Department confirmed the alert, saying the step was taken “out of an abundance of caution.”
The US Consulate General in Karachi stated, “Reports have been received about possible threats to luxury hotels in Karachi. As a preventive measure, the movement of American government personnel to such locations has been suspended until further notice.”
The advisory also urged US citizens in Pakistan to remain extremely cautious and to adopt extra security practices:
The Level 3 Travel Advisory for Pakistan remains in place, which urges Americans to “reconsider travel” because of terror threats and possible armed conflict.
Even as security warnings increase, Washington and Islamabad are expanding their economic partnership. Pakistan’s largest refiner, Cnergyico, confirmed it will import 1 million barrels of US crude oil from energy trader Vitol in October 2025.
Vice Chairman Usama Qureshi said, After reviewing the first shipment, the company may purchase at least one million barrels every month, considering our current demand is 4.6 million barrels.”
In a separate development, President Donald Trump announced a tariff reduction on Pakistani imports—slashing rates from 29% to 19%. Islamabad welcomed the move as a “turning point” for bilateral trade, predicting that the decision could lead to increased US investment.
According to Reuters, oil remains Pakistan’s biggest import item, accounting for $11.3 billion of purchases in FY2025 — nearly one-fifth of its total import bill.
The alert underscores the challenges of strengthening trade ties in a high-risk security environment. So far, neither side has confirmed whether the threat to hotels will delay the upcoming oil shipment or disrupt other trade deals.
The US Embassy reassured that reviews are ongoing, stressing, American citizens and officials in Pakistan are our utmost commitment.”
