International News: President Trump had hoped that a meeting with Putin would lead to a resolution to the Ukraine war. But nothing happened. Trump then threatened Russia with sanctions. In this regard, the US has imposed major sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies. The US Treasury Secretary gave this information on Wednesday and said that President Donald Trump believes that Vladimir Putin was not "honest and clear" in the Ukraine talks, hence he has imposed major sanctions on two of Russia's biggest oil companies.
The sanctions come a day after the cancellation of a planned Trump-Putin summit in Budapest, where Washington expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in ceasefire talks with Moscow. He warned that the Treasury Department was "prepared to take further action if necessary" to support President Donald Trump's efforts to end the war.
Speaking to Fox Business before the official announcement, Bessant said the move is "one of the largest sanctions we've ever taken against the Russian Federation." Trump has delayed new sanctions for months and has said he hopes to persuade Russian President Putin to make peace, despite growing frustration with the Kremlin leader. But Trump's patience has run out in the six days since his telephone call with Putin last Thursday.
Bessant told Fox Business that President Putin hasn't come to the negotiating table in the honest and forthright manner we had hoped. Bessant said that when the two leaders met in Alaska in August, "President Trump walked away when he realized things weren't moving forward." He said there have been behind-the-scenes talks, but I believe the President is disappointed with where we are in these talks.
The European Union said on Wednesday it was also imposing new sanctions on Russia. These include a ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia until 2027, a blacklist of oil tankers used by Moscow and travel restrictions on Russian diplomats. Since returning to office in January, Trump has repeatedly threatened sanctions against Russia but has not carried them out, as he wants an end to the three-and-a-half-year war with Russia.
Trump had expressed hope for a ceasefire deal after speaking with Putin last week, saying the two leaders had agreed to meet in Budapest within two weeks. But their meeting was canceled at the last minute.
