International News: The United States has announced higher tariffs on products from India, and this could make cooking more expensive for Americans. Many spices used in homes, restaurants, and food factories come from India, and with the new 50% tariff, their prices are likely to rise.

Warning from a Trade Group

The American Spice Trade Association said that spices such as cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves need tropical weather to grow, which is why they cannot be produced in large quantities in the US. To meet demand, these spices have to be imported, and India is one of the biggest suppliers.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, the country imported spices worth more than $410 million from India last year.

Big Losses for Spice Companies

In June, spice company McCormick warned that the tariff policy could cost them around $90 million a year. Experts believe this cost will eventually be passed on to American consumers.

Extra Burden on Consumers

The trade group explained that these tariffs will not increase US production or create jobs. Instead, they will raise costs for food makers, restaurants, and households across the country.

India Now Faces the Highest Tariffs in Asia

With this move, India has become the Asian nation facing the highest US tariffs, matching Brazil’s level. Indian exporters say they could handle a small increase of 10–15%, but a 50% tariff is far too high for them.

China Also Criticises the Decision

Before Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Beijing, China strongly opposed the US tariff action. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi accused America of using tariffs as a weapon to pressure other countries and called it a violation of international rules.
