Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed a 14-point agreement with Iran, and also claimed that it delivered a "major win" for the Washington. The US on Wednesday released the official text of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached over the weekend with Iran.
A senior US official stated that this historic 14-point agreement will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global trade. The US has also agreed to provide Iran with some economic sanctions relief, in exchange for which further negotiations will include Iran's nuclear program. Lebanon is also included in this agreement. However, Iran has not officially released the memorandum.
The agreement between the United States and Iran calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and the respect of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The two sides will negotiate to reach a final agreement within 60 days, while maintaining the status quo and refraining from taking any new military or restrictive measures.
Under the agreement, the US will lift the naval blockade on Iran, withdraw its troops, and provide relief from economic sanctions. Iran will ensure the safe and smooth passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The US has also pledged to develop a major economic plan for Iran's reconstruction and release frozen funds and assets to strengthen Iran's economy.
Furthermore, Iran has committed not to develop nuclear weapons, and further technical negotiations on its nuclear program will take place. A special mechanism will be established to monitor compliance with the agreement, and the final agreement will be approved by the United Nations Security Council, giving it international recognition.
Under this Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran, both countries and their allies have agreed to immediately and permanently end military action on all fronts, especially in Lebanon.
Upon signing this agreement, the movement of commercial vessels will resume immediately. Iran will ensure safe and completely free passage of commercial vessels from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman (and vice versa) for the next 60 days. Under this agreement, Iran will remove technical and military obstacles to the route and remove landmines from the sea within 30 days. Furthermore, Iran will negotiate with the Sultanate of Oman and other Persian Gulf littoral states, within the framework of international law, to determine the future management and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz.
