The tales of torture in Russian President Vladimir Putin's jails are tragic. The most recent one is that of 27-year-old Ukrainian reporter Victoria Roshchina, who was abducted while reporting in Russian-occupied areas. After being held captive for months and tortured, she was returned in a body bag. But her eyes, brain and throat were absent from his vocals. This has now sparked outrage over human rights across the globe.
The SIZO No. 2 prison in Taganrog, also referred to as the 'Chamber of Demons', is now a torture den. The prison was previously used to jail children and mothers, but now Russian authorities have converted it into a torture house for Ukrainian inmates. The detainees brought here are blindfolded and their hands tied and beaten in "welcome". Ex-prisoners expressed that there's horrific torture such as electric chairs, being hanged upside down. Victoria was also taken to the same prison where she was tortured inhumanely.
Victoria was initially imprisoned in Energodar and later in Melitopol, where she was brutally tortured for four months. She was taken to SIZO-2 after his health became very critical. It is suspected that she was killed here. Ukrainian investigators reported that he had been subjected to electric shocks, fractured ribs, blood in the eyes and fractures in the neck bones. All this indicates that he was tortured before he was killed.
Her body came back in February as part of a swap of 757 Ukrainian bodies. But it was marked as "an unidentified male" who died of a heart attack. Through DNA tests, it was identified that it was the body of Victoria Roshchina, who was emaciated, had a shaved head and a broken neck. The reason behind her death is still unknown since important parts of her body were amputated prior to the torture, and hence it was hard to investigate the death.
Victoria was awarded the 'Courage in Journalism Award' in 2022 for her bravery. She was reporting live from Mariupol and other regions of occupied Ukraine. Now her death has become a symbol. One of the cost of journalism and the brutality of Russian war crimes. Ukraine is collaborating with international experts to probe the incident so that the truth regarding Putin's "devil's cell" can be uncovered to the world.
