World News: A nose job performed by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has triggered intense controversy after it was revealed she underwent the procedure without informing the public or delegating her responsibilities. The procedure, which Boluarte says was necessary for breathing problems, took place in the summer of 2023. However, the revelation of her surgery, confirmed by her former Prime Minister Alberto Otarola, has sparked a political uproar, with some lawmakers now calling for her removal from office.

Boluarte’s Medical Procedure and the Fallout

On Tuesday, Alberto Otarola disclosed to a congressional committee that Boluarte had informed him about her plans to undergo a rhinoplasty to address breathing issues. The surgery took place between June 28 and July 10, 2023, during which the president went completely out of the public eye. Local media reported that Boluarte did not inform the public or delegate her power to Congress, which led to questions about her constitutional duties during this time.

"She told me she was going to get a rhinoplasty… a surgery on the nose, but for breathing problems," Otarola told lawmakers, who are conducting an inquiry into the period when Boluarte was out of sight. Despite undergoing the surgery, Otarola insisted that the president had carried out her duties remotely during her recovery and there was no disruption in the governance of Peru. "There was no absence of power at that time, because the surgical procedure had no major complications," he added.

Legal Challenges and Calls for Boluarte's Removal

This revelation has raised concerns among several lawmakers and legal experts, who argue that Boluarte violated constitutional norms by not seeking permission from Congress before undergoing the surgery. Lawmaker Juan Burgos, head of the congressional oversight commission, stated, “It would be cause for dismissal... because the president should have asked permission from Congress.”

Vice President of Congress Patricia Juarez attempted to downplay the situation, calling it “a storm in a glass of water.” However, the issue has reignited public and political tensions, especially given Boluarte's already controversial tenure.

A Leader Under Fire

President Boluarte has faced increasing scrutiny in recent months. She is under investigation for alleged bribery involving Rolex watches, and her role in the deaths of over 50 protesters during the 2022 crackdown on anti-government demonstrations remains a major point of contention. Her disapproval rating is alarmingly high, hovering near 95 percent. The president, who does not have a political party in Congress, has little support in the legislature, and her term is set to end in 2026.
