Is Drinking Alcohol Only on Weekends Harmless for Women? Know the Truth (X @mikeratcliffe)
New Delhi: Drinking alcohol on weekends is often considered a normal part of modern lifestyles. Many women believe that if they do not drink daily and consume alcohol only on weekends, it will not have any harmful effects on their health. But is this belief scientifically correct? It is important to understand that alcohol consumption is a significant and preventable risk factor that can increase the chances of breast cancer in women.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), no safe level of alcohol consumption has been established in terms of cancer risk. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is sufficient scientific evidence that it can cause cancer.
Alcohol can affect hormone levels in the body, including oestrogen. Additionally, acetaldehyde, a harmful substance produced when alcohol breaks down in the body, can damage the DNA of cells.
Consuming alcohol only on weekends does not make it harmless. The risk of cancer is influenced by the total amount of alcohol consumed and the pattern of consumption. Even drinking small amounts does not completely eliminate the risk.
However, this does not mean that every woman who drinks alcohol will develop breast cancer. Alcohol consumption can increase the likelihood of developing the disease, but it does not make it inevitable.
Consuming alcohol and smoking together can be more harmful to health. Some studies have found a higher risk of breast cancer among women who engage in both habits.
Harmful chemicals present in tobacco smoke can damage DNA, while alcohol may increase cancer risk through hormonal changes and other biological processes. However, the combined effect of smoking and alcohol on breast cancer risk has not been conclusively established as additive across all studies.
Avoiding alcohol and smoking is an important step towards reducing the risk of breast cancer. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and undergoing breast cancer screening as advised by a healthcare professional are also important preventive measures.
