From Curiosity To Stress: Survey Reveals Why People Get Hooked On Obscene Content

New Delhi: Showing strictness regarding the increasing obscene content on digital platforms, the government has blocked five OTT platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken action against platforms like MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu. They were accused of showing obscene and objectionable content. The government has taken this step under the IT Act and Digital Media Rules to ensure decency and law enforcement on online platforms.

Why did the government take action against OTT platforms?

According to government officials, such content was being streamed on these platforms which was considered obscene and inappropriate under the law. Under Section 69A of the IT Act, the government has the right to block online platforms that violate the law. Under this process, internet service providers were instructed to block access to these platforms.

What came out in the research?

On this topic, a team of international researchers conducted a study on the habit of watching porn among youth. In the research, about 276 college students were asked why they watch porn. Analysis of their answers revealed about 78 different reasons. Later in the second phase, by analyzing the data of more than 300 participants, these reasons were classified into some larger groups.

What turned out to be the biggest reason?

Research has found that increased sex drive or sexual curiosity is the most important reason. Many participants reported that they watch porn for excitement, fantasies, or entertainment. Some people also admitted that they are attracted to such content to relieve boredom or get quick gratification.

Do people even watch to learn?

The study also revealed that some people consider it a medium of learning. Many participants said they watch this type of content to better understand relationships and sexual behavior. According to them, through this they try to create better coordination with their partner.

Is this behavior also related to stress and loneliness?

According to research, emotional reasons also play an important role. People also turn to this type of content in times of loneliness, distance in relationships, stress or sadness. Some participants acknowledged that it provided them with temporary relief or distraction.

Was there a difference between men and women?

The study also found that men's scores were higher than women's in many categories. However, in terms of learning or acquiring information, the answers of both were found to be almost similar. Researchers conclude that the habit of watching porn cannot be explained only by entertainment or curiosity, but there are also psychological and social reasons behind it.
