Coimbatore PG Student Abducted and Physically assaulted: 3 Arrested in Police Shootout

Coimbatore: We are becoming modern, but our thinking towards women is still the same. Even today women are not safe anywhere.  Sensational news has come from Coimbatore, where a 20-year-old postgraduate student was in a car with her boyfriend when three miscreants targeted her on Sunday night.

What police said?

According to the police, the car was parked at Brindavan Nagar, behind the Coimbatore Airport, around 10:30 pm when three men on a moped broke the windshield of the car and attacked the boyfriend with weapons. They threatened the woman and took her on a moped to a deserted place a kilometer away and raped her repeatedly.

When was the victim found?

The injured boyfriend informed the Peelamedu police, who started a search at 11 pm. The victim was recovered at around 4 am, but the attackers had fled from the spot. He left the stolen moped. The victim has been admitted to a private hospital in the city. She is a resident of Madurai and was studying while staying in a hostel in Coimbatore.

How many teams were formed?

On Monday night the police opened fire to arrest the three accused—Satish, Guna, and Karthik (all from Madurai district). He was a daily wage laborer and lived in a rented room in Coimbatore. All three were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said that seven special teams were formed. Photographs of more than 60 people with criminal records were shown, but the victim did not recognize anyone. Due to the glare in the CCTV, faces were not clearly visible.

What is a political reaction and protest? 

The AIADMK women's wing has announced a protest against rape and violence against women. BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan visited the crime scene along with party workers on Monday evening. The victim is in shock, while her friend is in a stable condition. Police investigation is ongoing.
