CJP Leaders Abhijeet Dipke and Associates Released, Must Maintain Peace for One Year (Facebook)

New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, co-convenor Saurav Das and national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka were released by Delhi Police on Sunday, October 11. The trio were taken into preventive custody when they reached Delhi a day earlier to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. After appearing in the court of the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) located in Delhi Cantt, all three paid a surety bond of Rs 50,000 to maintain peace and good behaviour for a year. After this the court ordered his release.

Why was the arrest action taken?

According to Delhi Police, the three leaders were arrested as a precautionary measure on October 10 under Sections 126 and 170 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS). Police said all necessary legal procedures were followed during the arrest. The next day all three were produced in the court of the Special Executive Magistrate. The court ordered his release on condition of maintaining peace and good behaviour.

Why was permission not given to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar?

Cockroach Janata Party had called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party had raised the issue of alleged irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. However, Delhi Police refused to allow the demonstration. Police cited apprehension about law and order and the application being submitted late than the scheduled time as the reasons for this. After this, security arrangements were tightened in the capital and surveillance was increased on the roads leading to the protest site.

How large was the scope of the detention action in the capital?

On the day of the protest, police detained leaders, workers and protesters at several places in Delhi. Apart from the leaders of the opposition parties, the news of YouTuber Dhruv Rathi, who criticised the government's policies on social media, has also been detained. Barricading was done to prevent the protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar and security forces were deployed in many areas. Public transport and traffic were also affected during this action. However, different media reports gave different numbers of those detained.

What will be CJP's further strategy after release?

After the release of the three leaders, the party's next strategy is now in focus. CJP has welcomed the release of its leaders. An announcement has also been made by the party to address the media. This responsibility has been handed over to the national in-charge of the organisation, Ajinkya Shinde. According to the report, Abhijeet Deepke had handed over the responsibility of carrying forward the movement to Shinde before being taken into custody. In such a situation, the situation regarding the next phase of the protest and further action of the party can become clear during the media briefing.

Why did the dispute increase between political parties?

Political rhetoric regarding the detention of protesters also intensified. Opposition leaders questioned the police action and demanded the release of those detained. On the other hand, BJP targeted the opposition over the protest and called it a victory of democracy. At the heart of the entire controversy is the process of special intensive revision of the voter list and the demand for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The release of the CJP leaders has ended the immediate matter of detention, but there are indications that political confrontation over the protest issue may continue.
