Uttar Pradesh: The Mahakumbh 2025, which began on January 13 and runs until February 26 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to attract over 450 million devotees. In a first, authorities are integrating advanced technology such as facial recognition and AI to manage the event's massive crowds and assist in tracing lost individuals. Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi emphasized the goal of having “somewhat-perfect tech” to ensure better outcomes during the event.
Unlike traditional places like malls and train stations, the Mahakumbh crowds will be large and disorganized, making it challenging for facial recognition systems to work. However, the AI tools will be used once a person is reported missing. Digital images of the missing individual will be generated and cross-referenced with images from thousands of cameras placed throughout the venue, assisting officials in tracking the person down quickly.

To further enhance security, RFID wristbands will be distributed to attendees, containing essential information such as emergency contacts and medical details. Additionally, a dedicated mobile app will allow visitors to share their live location with authorities, further ensuring their safety and swift assistance in case of emergencies.
Strategically placed cameras will help monitor crowd movements and prevent accidents like stampedes. The AI system will send real-time alerts to officials in case of crowd surges, while AI-powered maps and chatbot services will guide people to emergency facilities. Furthermore, an affordable insurance scheme by PhonePe is being offered to cover visitors for accidents or emergencies at the event.
