National News: The Air India AI-171 plane crash on June 12 has left the nation in shock. The London-bound flight crashed due to a technical fault just minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, resulting in the tragic loss of 275 lives—including 241 passengers on board and 34 people on the ground.

DNA Matching Aids in Identifying Victims

Following the tragedy, efforts to identify the victims are moving forward swiftly. According to Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, 215 bodies have been identified through DNA matching. Among these, 198 bodies have already been handed over to their families.

Because of the intensity of the crash, many bodies were either extensively burned or critically disfigured, rendering visual identification impossible. DNA testing became crucial in such circumstances. Authorities have ensured that all identification procedures are being carried out with sensitivity, accuracy, and respect to provide closure for grieving families.

Foreign Nationals Among the Victims

Among the 198 identified victims, 149 were Indian nationals, along with 32 British citizens, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian. Additionally, the bodies of 7 local residents who lost their lives on the ground have also been returned to their families.

Pilot and Crew Receive Emotional Farewell

The co-pilot, Clive Kunder, was laid to rest on Thursday at Mumbai’s Sewri Christian Cemetery. Thousands gathered to pay their respects. Meanwhile, flight attendant Roshni Songhare, a resident of Dombivli in Thane, was also given a solemn farewell and laid to rest. Roshni, whose identity was confirmed via DNA test, was scheduled to marry a merchant navy officer next year.

Infant Survivor Battles for Life

One of the most heartbreaking stories is that of eight-month-old Dhyanansh, who suffered 28% burn injuries. He and his mother were present in one of the buildings impacted by the crash. The child is currently receiving intensive care at the Pediatric ICU (PICU) at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Doctors report that his condition is slowly improving, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.

Safety Survey Around Airport to Begin

In response to the crash, authorities have announced a comprehensive safety audit of the areas surrounding the airport. Ahmedabad District Magistrate Sujeet Kumar confirmed that, as per DGCA guidelines, a survey will be conducted to assess whether any buildings violate height and safety regulations. Any structure found breaching the norms will face strict action to ensure future air safety.

This catastrophe has not only brought unimaginable sorrow to countless families but has also raised serious concerns over aviation safety protocols. For now, the government's focus is on dignified management of the victims' remains and implementing preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.
