Jammu and Kashmir: The incident of cloudburst twice within just an hour on Saturday night in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir caused huge devastation. Hotels, resorts, houses and farms were inundated with water and debris due to flash floods in Pahalgam and Shangus areas following continuous heavy rains. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations, while the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain for the next 24 hours.
The first incident occurred in the upper hilly area of Chattargul in Shangas, where the water level of Aripath drain suddenly increased due to a cloudburst. With the strong flow from the mountains, mud, big stones and tree debris reached the settlements and fields below.
About an hour later, another cloud burst in Overa Wildlife Sanctuary area of Pahalgam. Due to this, the flood in Overa drain engulfed the surrounding areas.
The water of the sudden flood entered about half a dozen hotels, resorts and houses of local people. A huge amount of debris accumulated in many residential areas and fields. Apple orchards and standing crops have also been damaged.
However, it is a matter of relief that no casualty has been reported so far.
After the incident, the district administration immediately started relief and rescue operations. Tourists staying in hotels located near Overa drain were taken to safe places with the help of rescue teams. Besides, the work of removing debris accumulated due to landslides is also going on at many places.
Anantnag administration has issued a heavy rain alert for Sunday and put all concerned departments on high alert. Local people and tourists have been appealed to stay away from all rivers and water sources including Aripath and Overa drains.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain in many areas of Kashmir for the next 24 hours. The administration has asked people to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories until the weather becomes normal.
