New Delhi: As the political landscape heats up ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5, 2025, Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has made a significant announcement aimed at tenants in the capital. Kejriwal stated that if AAP secures victory, tenants will be included in the government's free power and water scheme. This move is part of a broader strategy to attract voters as the party seeks to maintain its hold on power for a third consecutive term.
Election Context and Competition
The upcoming election is poised to be a fierce contest, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress vying to unseat AAP. The counting of votes will take place on February 8, following a single-day polling process. Kejriwal's announcement comes as part of a series of incentives designed to appeal to various voter demographics, including women and senior citizens.
Comprehensive Welfare Initiatives
In addition to the free utilities for tenants, AAP has proposed several other welfare measures. These include a monthly honorarium of ₹2,100 for women, free healthcare services for the elderly, and ₹10 lakh insurance for auto drivers. Furthermore, Kejriwal recently announced that Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) would receive funding to hire private security guards if AAP retains power. These initiatives are designed to complement existing programs that have already improved education through revamped government schools and provided accessible healthcare via mohalla clinics.
Election Logistics and Voter Engagement
The Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar confirmed that the election will be conducted in a single phase, with measures in place to encourage higher voter turnout. "We have deliberately kept polling on a Wednesday so more people come out to vote," Kumar explained. The last date for filing nominations was January 17, with candidates allowed to withdraw their nominations until January 20.Kumar also addressed concerns regarding voter eligibility, asserting that no names would be removed from voter lists without proper documentation and verification processes. This commitment aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process. As Delhi prepares for this pivotal election, AAP's promises could play a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment and determining the outcome of this highly competitive political battle.
