An Army officer has been booked for a serious physical assault after a disagreement over extra baggage turned violent at Srinagar Airport last week. The officer is accused of attacking four ground staff members of SpiceJet Airlines, which led to one employee suffering a spinal fracture and another receiving serious injuries to the jaw. As per the airline’s statement, the officer “violently attacked four of its staff at the boarding gate of flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi on July 26, 2025.” The issue reportedly started when he was told that his cabin baggage, weighing 16 kg, was more than the allowed limit of 7 kg.
SpiceJet stated that the staff politely explained the baggage rules and asked the officer to pay for the excess weight. However, instead of complying, the officer allegedly forced his way into the aerobridge without finishing the boarding process. The airline said this act broke airport security rules. A CISF officer was called to bring him back. Following this, the officer allegedly turned violent at the boarding gate. According to SpiceJet, the staff were punched, kicked repeatedly, and even hit with a cue stand. One employee was knocked unconscious but continued to be attacked by the passenger.
Another staff member who bent down to help the unconscious colleague was also injured after being kicked in the jaw, causing heavy bleeding. Overall, four employees were badly hurt and taken to a hospital. SpiceJet described the injuries as severe and confirmed they are receiving medical treatment. The airline also said they have filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police and started steps to place the officer on India’s no-fly list.
SpiceJet has sent a letter to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, asking them to take strict action against the officer for what it called a "murderous assault." CCTV footage from the incident has been handed over to the authorities as part of the investigation. In their official statement, SpiceJet said it strongly opposes any form of violence against its employees and promised to follow through with all legal steps to ensure justice.
