In a joint operation, a team including Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and CRPF recovered a large quantity of heroin and methamphetamine tablets worth ₹76 crore in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Monday, July 20. One person from Silchar, Assam, was arrested during the operation, officials said in a statement.
According to officials, the action took place on the Barak River, between the Chaudharykhal and Savomphai areas. Acting on specific intelligence, the security forces were patrolling the river when they noticed a suspicious boat. When the team signaled it to stop, the driver tried to escape. After a brief chase, the boat was caught, leading to the discovery of 616 soap cases filled with heroin and 50,000 methamphetamine tablets.
The arrested individual, believed to be involved in drug trafficking, is being questioned. Authorities say the drugs were likely being moved through water routes to avoid road checks.
The Assam Rifles have been leading anti-drug efforts across Manipur. Officials described this latest seizure as one of the largest in recent times, highlighting the growing threat of drug smuggling in the region. Regular operations are being carried out to crack down on drug networks that operate along the border and river routes.
Just days before this seizure, security forces conducted coordinated raids across several districts in Manipur, including Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Tengnoupal. During these efforts, 10 armed group members were caught and a significant amount of weapons, IEDs, grenades, and ammunition were recovered.
These ongoing operations reflect the continued focus of law enforcement agencies on maintaining peace and security in the troubled regions of Manipur, while also targeting the growing issue of cross-border smuggling and organized crime.
