UP News: In a significant decision, authorities have temporarily halted the Ganga Aarti at the ghats of Varanasi for public participation until February 5, 2025. This measure has been implemented in response to a surge in crowds, ensuring the safety and well-being of both locals and visitors.
Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal has urged residents of Kashi to refrain from unnecessary outings and to cooperate with the influx of devotees. This appeal highlights the importance of community responsibility during this busy period.
Sushant Mishra, President of Ganga Seva Nidhi, confirmed that the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat will remain closed to the general public until February 5. Similar advisories have been issued by committees managing the Aarti at other prominent ghats, including Sheetla Ghat and Assi Ghat.
The situation has been exacerbated by a large number of devotees returning from the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, many of whom are currently stranded at Varanasi Cantt and Banaras railway stations. Reports indicate that excessive crowds have prevented many from boarding their trains.
Bobby Maya Limbu from Assam shared her experience, stating that after bathing at Sangam Ghat on January 26, she arrived in Varanasi on Thursday but was unable to catch her train due to overwhelming crowds. Similarly, Dinanath from Gaya district expressed frustration over being stranded with his family for two days, having faced suffocation while trying to board a train.
Rajat Singh, who manages a night shelter set up for Kumbh passengers, noted that while it provides temporary accommodation, there are no food facilities available. This situation underscores the challenges faced by many devotees during this peak period.
Cantt Assistant Commissioner of Police Vidush Saxena reported an increase in devotees since Mauni Amavasya and emphasized that security forces are actively patrolling the station. He urged devotees to postpone their visits to Varanasi until the crowd situation improves.
