Mumbai: The BJP is on its way to creating history in Mumbai. The saffron is about to win the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai for the first time in its history. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena, have dominated their political rivals in the Maharashtra Civic Body Elections 2026.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called up Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam and congratulated him, even as the BJP-Shiv Sena Mahayuti leads in the BMC elections. The BJP, which forms the state government in Maharashtra under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, had earlier never managed to win the BMC minicipal elections in the financial capital of the country.
A wave of support for the BJP is visible in 20 municipalities, including the BMC. Meanwhile, the Congress party remains strong in Latur and Chandrapur. Elections were held on Thursday in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The final results are expected by 5 PM. Significantly, the BMC elections were held after a gap of nearly nine years. Officials say that the 2026 elections have broken the voting records of 2017.

Voting took place for 2,869 seats across 893 wards in the state. The political future of 15,931 candidates rests in the hands of 3.48 crore voters. In a significant political development before the elections, cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, who had separated two decades ago, came together to unite Marathi voters, while rival factions of the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) formed an alliance in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is heading towards a major victory in the BMC elections. It is being said that with this, Uddhav Thackeray is on the verge of losing control here after several decades. He had formed an alliance with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief and cousin Raj Thackeray for the BMC elections. With this victory, Mumbai is set to get a BJP-Shinde Sena mayor after 28 years.
In Jalna, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 41 wards. Trends for all 65 wards have been released. The Shiv Sena is in second place with 12 seats. The Congress is leading in 9 seats, and AIMIM has a lead in 2 seats. Shiv Sena UBT and both factions of the NCP have not yet opened their accounts. Jalna became the 29th municipal corporation of Maharashtra in 2023. It appears that the BJP has benefited in Jalna from the defection of former Congress leader and former MLA Kailas Gorantyal to the BJP. Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM is leading in 20 wards of Malegaon. Notably, in Malegaon, which has 84 wards, the BJP is in fifth place, leading in only two seats. The Shiv Sena is in second place, leading in 18 seats. The Samajwadi Party is leading in 6 seats, and the Congress in 3.
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar commented on the Maharashtra civic election results, saying, "First of all, I want to thank the people of Mumbai and express my gratitude for showing their trust in the BJP alliance... This mandate has been given for the development of Mumbai. We have won the trust of the people of Mumbai by dedicating important projects like the Metro rail network, Coastal Road, and Trans Harbour Link to them, and this mandate reflects the desire of the people of Mumbai for the city's development."
