Fatal Thar Crash Near Rashtrapati Bhavan (Social Media)
National News: An early morning road tragedy in central Delhi, close to the high-security Rashtrapati Bhavan area, has left one man dead and another severely injured. The incident occurred when a Mahindra Thar SUV, moving at high speed, ran over two pedestrians.
Witnesses report that the man who died was walking along the roadside when the SUV struck him with such intensity that he died instantly. The second victim, badly hurt in the collision, was rushed to a nearby hospital. People present at the scene have alleged that the deceased’s body remained on the road for several hours before being moved, raising questions over emergency response timing.
The case falls under the jurisdiction of the Chanakyapuri police station. Law enforcement reached the spot quickly and detained the driver. A forensic team was called to thoroughly inspect the vehicle, where officers reportedly found liquor bottles. Investigators are now trying to determine whether alcohol consumption was a factor in the crash.

Police identified the driver as Ashish, aged 26, who had borrowed the Thar from a friend. Preliminary questioning revealed his claim that he dozed off while driving, which led to him losing control. Despite this statement, authorities are awaiting toxicology and alcohol test results to confirm whether he was intoxicated at the time.
New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar Mahala said that at about 6:30 a.m., a police patrol noticed the accident scene. “The driver, Ashish, was on his way from Gurgaon to Shakarpur when the SUV hit two pedestrians walking on the footpath. One man died on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries. The driver was detained immediately, and a full medical check-up is underway. We are also working to identify both victims,” he stated.
The severity of the crash and reports of delayed action in removing the body have drawn criticism from locals. Many expressed concern over speeding vehicles in sensitive areas of the capital, where pedestrian traffic is high.
Police have assured that a complete investigation will determine the exact cause—whether it was driver fatigue, reckless speed, or driving under the influence. Authorities have also reiterated appeals for motorists to drive cautiously, especially during early morning hours when visibility and alertness can be compromised.
