Chirag Paswan Scales Down Demand to 35 Seats (X)
National News: Chirag Paswan has reduced his seat-sharing demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections from 40 to 35. However, he is challenging his allies' current hold on some key seats, leading to a deadlock.
Chirag Paswan has demanded 35 assembly seats from the BJP, specifically two seats each in five Lok Sabha constituencies—Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagaria, Jamui, and Vaishali—that his party won in the 2024 general elections. He has also staked claim to seats like Govindganj, Matihani, and Sikandarpur, which are currently held by the BJP, JD(U), and HAM(S). The BJP has offered Chirag Paswan 26 seats, including 23 assembly seats, two Legislative Council (MLC) seats, and one Rajya Sabha seat.
Chirag Paswan has authorized his party to make the final decision on seat sharing. He has stated that as a minister, government work is also important, and seat negotiations are still ongoing. This indicates that he is strategically considering his share, and a final decision is pending.
Other NDA allies, such as the HAM(S) and the RLM, are also making their own demands regarding seat sharing. The BJP and JD(U) plan to contest approximately 100 seats each, while the LJP(RV) may get 25 seats. Although an agreement has been reached on the number of seats, the dispute over seat distribution remains.
Chirag Paswan's seat demands and his claims on some key seats have created a deadlock within the NDA. While talks are ongoing with the BJP and other allies, reaching a final agreement may take time. As the election dates draw closer, it will be interesting to see whether Chirag's demands are met and what form the NDA alliance takes.
