Delhi Police Files 4 FIRs After Connaught Place Violence During CJP Protest, Multiple Charges Invoked

New Delhi: The atmosphere in the capital is heated after the 'Sansad Chalo' demonstration by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) amid the Parliament session. Delhi Police has registered a case against unknown people and started investigation regarding the uproar near Regal Cinema in Connaught Place on Monday.

What happened in Connaught Place?

According to the police, the demonstration suddenly went out of control near Regal Cinema, Outer Circle, Connaught Place on Monday. It is alleged that some people in the crowd vandalised police vehicles and threw stones at the soldiers on duty. After the incident, a case was registered against unknown people at Connaught Place police station. Police are now identifying the miscreants through nearby CCTV footage and viral videos on social media.

How many FIRs have been registered so far?

Delhi Police has confirmed to have registered four FIRs so far in cases related to this entire incident, while the process of legal action is going on in two other cases as well. These include allegations like flying a drone during the Parliament session without permission, alleged conspiracy to commit violence, obstruction in government work, assault on policemen and damage to government property. Police say that during the investigation, much important digital and technical evidence has also been recovered, which is being investigated.

Under which sections was the case registered?

The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS), Arms Act and Protection from Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP Act). These include serious charges like illegal assembly, rioting, obstruction in the work of a public servant, assault on a government employee, criminal conspiracy and damaging public property. Sansad Marg and Connaught Place police station are jointly investigating the case and all aspects are being investigated.

Why did the protesters start gathering again at Jantar Mantar?

Despite Monday's clashes, students and CJP supporters started gathering at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday morning. The protesters are adamant about their demands and are talking about continuing the movement. However, the organisation has indicated that the strategy of future protest events may be changed to avoid violent confrontation. Additional police forces are deployed in the entire area and security arrangements have been tightened.

What allegations did CJP make against the police?

CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka claimed that the police used excessive force during the demonstration. They allege that many students and youth were beaten up, due to which many people were injured. The organisation says that until concrete action is not taken by the government on their demands, the movement will continue in some form or the other.

Delhi Police has termed many videos and posts circulated on social media as misleading and has appealed to the people not to share unconfirmed information. Police say that some viral claims like alleged assault of a young woman, hair pulling and serious injuries to a large number of people are not confirmed on the basis of available facts. Police clarified that the entire matter is being investigated impartially and action will be taken against the culprits as per law.
