New Delhi: The cold once again surprised people in Delhi on Saturday morning. Even before the sun rose, the cold winds had such an effect that people were seen wrapped in warm clothes and started feeling shivering. In many areas the minimum temperature was recorded around 4.2 degrees Celsius. Dense fog, cold air, and silent roads… the mood of the capital seemed completely changed. Those who set out for work were walking briskly.
According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature of Delhi was around 4.2 degrees. Even less was felt in some outer areas. Cold is common in January, but this time the fall is considered to be sharp.
In the morning it was difficult to see beyond a few meters in many areas. People were seen waiting for late-arriving buses at the bus stop. Office goers crossed the road by lighting mobile torches. Vehicles kept moving on the roads.
Many flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport took off later than scheduled. Some passengers had to wait for hours. There were repeated announcements from the airlines. Many people informed their families about the delay over the phone.
Rickshaw pullers lit bonfires. Traders were seen rubbing hands in the vegetable market. School-going children were sent wrapped in mufflers and caps. A shopkeeper said, “Tea will be sold more today; it is very cold.”
Doctors say that in such cold, the risk of breathing problems, joint pain, and viral infection increases. Especially the elderly and small children are more affected. Patients with cough and fever started appearing in hospitals since morning.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that the cold is not going to go away yet. Morning and night temperatures may go down further. Cold wave-like conditions may persist in some areas.
The number of children remained less in some schools. Many parents said that it became difficult to raise their children in such cold. People also arrived late in offices. Morning traffic was slower than usual.
People have been asked not to go out unnecessarily in the morning and evening. Wear warm clothes. Take warm water and hot drinks. Those sleeping in the open have been advised to take special precautions.
