New Delhi: Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 5.1 degrees above normal and 0.9 degrees above Friday. The mercury soared to 44.5 degrees in the Ridge, 42.6 degrees on Lodhi Road, and 43.2 degrees in Ayanagar. This is the hottest day in Delhi since 2022; 43.5 degrees was recorded on April 28 that year. That is, after four years there has been so much fire in April.
According to IMD, heat wave is considered when the temperature is 40 degrees or above and is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees more than normal. On Saturday, many stations in Delhi met this criteria simultaneously; hence, heat wave was declared in the entire city. An IMD official said that on Thursday, Rohtak in Haryana and Ridge in Delhi had met this condition for the first time; that is, Saturday was actually the third consecutive day of heat wave.
The minimum temperature in Safdarjung was 25.2 degrees — 2.5 degrees above normal. In Palam it was around 26.8 degrees. Due to hot winds the night temperature is not falling.
IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Sunday and warned of isolated heatwave. That means even today there is less hope for relief.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of light rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds between Monday and Wednesday. By the end of next week the maximum temperature may fall between 38 and 40 degrees. There will definitely be some relief, but the coolness is still far away.
With the heat the air is also becoming poisonous. The air quality index (AQI) has reached 'poor' category. This means that people who are coming out have to struggle with both heat and pollution simultaneously.
