Delhi High Court Grants Three-Day Interim Bail To Umar Khalid For Mother's Surgery (X)

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday granted three days interim bail to activist and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader, Umar Khalid, from June 1 to 3, in connection with the UAPA case alleging larger conspiracy in commission of 2020 North East Delhi riots, in view of his mother's surgery.

What did the court say?

The division bench comprising of Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Madhu Jain ordered that Umar Khalid be released between June 1 till June 3, on strict conditions.

While granting bail, the Delhi High Court imposed several conditions on Umar Khalid and also directed him to remain within the Delhi-NCR region, stay at the address provided to the authorities, refrain from visiting any place other than the hospital, and use only one mobile phone number during the bail period.

Why did Umar approach Delhi High Court?

Earlier, Khalid had sought interim bail for 15 days for attending the Chehlum ritual after death of his late uncle and to talk care of his mother, whose medical surgery is scheduled on June 2.

Umar Khalid had approached the Delhi High Court after a trial court rejected his plea seeking temporary relief.

What did the police say?

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appearing for the Delhi Police on the other hand submitted that Umar Khalid's mother has to undergo only a minor surgery and that his father and sisters can take care of her. Even otherwise, he added that Khalid can visit her and come back in a day, with police escort.
