Kolkata: Ex-Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh on Thursday was arrested over his alleged involvement in the "hurried cremation" of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in 2024, according to police.
Police have arrested former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh in connection with the investigation into alleged irregularities in the last rites of a female trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
He was arrested from Sambalpur, Odisha. Panihati Municipality councillor Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbour of the victim's family, have also been named in the case.

According to police, the victim's body was taken to a crematorium in Panihati and cremated before two other bodies in the queue.
The doctor's father in his complaint alleged that her cremation was carried out in undue haste under the supervision of the trio, allegedly to prevent the possibility of a second autopsy and thus conceal evidence.
The police investigation also revealed that the funeral consent documents were signed by neighbors, rather than parents or family members. Questions have also been raised about the waiver of funeral fees.
At the direction of Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, police launched a fresh investigation into these allegations. According to police officials, this case is separate from the original rape and murder investigation being conducted by the CBI.
A 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024. One person has been convicted in the case, while the case is pending in the Calcutta High Court.
