New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has updated its official list of fake universities operating across the country. These institutions are not recognised under the UGC Act, and degrees they award are not valid for higher education or government jobs, the regulator has warned. Students and parents have been urged to check university names carefully before admissions.

Which States Are on the Fake List?

According to the recent state-wise rundown of universities flagged by UGC as fake or not properly recognised, Delhi has the highest number of such institutions with 11, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4. Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have 2 each, while Maharashtra and Puducherry have one each. This list reflects institutions operating without legal authority to grant degrees.

What Does UGC Say About These Listings?

The UGC has stressed that degrees or diplomas from these institutions are not valid for further studies, government jobs, or professional registrations. It has repeatedly warned students, parents and teachers to consult the official UGC website for the latest list of recognised universities before seeking admission.

How Did These Lists Change Over Time?

This is not the first time UGC has flagged fake institutions. The regulator has published similar lists in recent years and even shut down some universities for false claims and non-compliance.

Applicants are advised to verify any institution’s UGC recognition status before paying fees or enrolling.
