Gitanjali Appeals to Top Leaders for Sonam Wangchuk’s Release (X)
Sonam’s wife filed a petition in the Supreme Court:Geetanjali J. Angmo, wife of environmentalist and academic Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court challenging her husband's arrest. In her petition, Geetanjali has demanded Sonam Wangchuk's release.
Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent clashes in Ladakh on September 24th. He was subsequently held in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. According to official records, Geetanjali filed this petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday, October 2nd.
Gitanjali had earlier appealed for the intervention to President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Ladakh Governor Kavinder Gupta, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Leh District Collector for the release of her husband. She shared her letter on the social media platform X (Twitter).
Gitanjali alleged that her husband was being portrayed as a "traitor." She said, "Spying is being conducted against us." We have submitted all the documents to the authorities, yet attempts are being made to defame Sonam to weaken the Sixth Schedule movement.
The arrest was prompted by the Leh police's reference to Sonam's visit to Pakistan and allegations of her links to the neighboring country. Geetanjali clarified that Sonam had attended a climate change conference held in Pakistan, where no inappropriate activity took place.
Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under the NSA on September 26. Violent protests resulted in the deaths of at least four people and the arrest of 44 others. Protesters in Leh continue their demands for the Sixth Schedule.
