National news: Gurugram, Haryana’s corporate hub, witnessed unprecedented flooding after over 100 millimetres of rainfall in just hours. National Highway-48 turned into a stagnant lake, leaving commuters stranded for hours without relief. The District Disaster Management Authority issued an unusual advisory, urging schools to shift online and corporate offices to enable work-from-home. Officials warned more showers could further escalate the fragile situation.

Hathnikund Barrage Gates Opened

With Yamuna’s swelling waters posing a threat, authorities opened the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar. The move was aimed at easing river pressure but triggered downstream fears of floods in adjoining districts.

Political Tempers Rise High

Congress workers staged a symbolic protest in Gurugram by sailing a boat across flooded streets. Their message: BJP’s state government had failed to control waterlogging despite repeated public warnings. They accused the administration of ignoring civic planning in the city’s rapid expansion. Protestors shouted slogans highlighting the daily hardships of residents, from flooded basements to damaged vehicles. The scene of a boat on the streets became a viral symbol of citizens’ frustration.

Social Media Outrage Grows Louder

Videos of bumper-to-bumper traffic, stranded trucks, and flooded homes went viral online. Citizens mocked Gurugram’s “Millennium City” status, calling it a “floating city” and demanding accountability from state and civic authorities. Angry posts tagged local leaders and ministries, demanding immediate answers. Memes comparing Gurugram’s skyline to Venice spread quickly across platforms. Social media amplified the narrative that technology hubs cannot survive without basic infrastructure support.

Double-Engine Sarkar Targeted

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi blasted the BJP’s “double-engine government” for failing Gurugram. Her sharp post compared the ruling dispensation’s promises to the grim reality of citizens wading through waist-deep water. Opposition parties echoed her criticism, accusing the government of hollow assurances. They highlighted how repeated monsoon chaos exposes weak drainage planning. The “double-engine” phrase turned into a trending hashtag of ridicule and political attack.

CM Chairs Emergency Meeting

Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini convened a late-night video conference with all deputy commissioners. Reviewing flood-control measures, he instructed swift relief operations but citizens remained sceptical, demanding visible results, not bureaucratic assurances. Officials were ordered to deploy extra pumps in vulnerable areas. Teams were asked to maintain constant communication with citizens via helplines. Yet, critics argued that such meetings happen every year without tangible outcomes.
