Fatal Crash in Himachal’s Chamba, Six People Killed (Social media)

National News: A heartbreaking road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district has claimed the lives of six people, including two children from the same family. The tragedy occurred in the Tissa area on Thursday, when a car skidded off a hilly road and plunged around 500 meters into a deep gorge.

The victims include the wife and two children of Rajesh Kumar, a government school teacher posted in the region. Rajesh had travelled with his wife, Hanso, to Banikhet to bring back their children—a 17-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son—who were studying there. The family was returning home in a Swift car driven by Rajesh’s brother-in-law, Hemraj, who was fondly called “Fauji” in the village.

The Journey Home

According to locals, the family was in good spirits during their journey back. On the way, they met a villager named Rakesh Kumar, who requested a lift to the same village. Without hesitation, the family welcomed him into the car. Sadly, this would be their final ride together.

The accident happened just about a kilometer before they could reach their destination. The car was passing through a narrow, winding stretch of road near a place called Chanwas when it reportedly lost control. Initial accounts suggest the vehicle may have slipped due to loose gravel or uneven terrain, a common hazard in the hill district.

A Sudden and Fatal Plunge

Eyewitnesses said the car veered off the road in seconds and tumbled down a steep slope, falling nearly 500 meters. Such depths in the mountainous region often make accidents particularly deadly, leaving little chance for survival.

The crash was so severe that all six occupants—two men, two women, and two children—died on the spot. Villagers rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the sound of the crash. They informed the police and local rescue teams, who arrived quickly with the help of disaster response personnel. However, by the time the bodies were recovered, there were no signs of life.

Rescue Efforts and Community Grief

Authorities worked for hours to retrieve the victims from the gorge, as the steep slope and scattered wreckage made the operation difficult. The remains of the vehicle were completely mangled, showing the intensity of the fall.

News of the accident spread quickly across the area, leaving the local community in shock. For many villagers, it was an especially painful loss, as several of the deceased were well-known and respected. Rajesh Kumar was known as a dedicated teacher, his wife Hanso was active in local events, and their children were described as bright and cheerful. Hemraj, the driver, was loved for his friendly nature, while Rakesh Kumar was a familiar face in the village.

A Reminder of Hill Road Dangers

The incident has once again highlighted the risks of travelling on narrow mountain roads, where sharp curves, loose soil, and lack of protective barriers can turn a small mistake into a disaster. Local residents have urged authorities to improve road safety in the region to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the families prepare for the funerals, the mood in the village remains heavy with grief. Six lives lost in a matter of seconds have left a deep wound that will take years to heal.
