Monsoon Chaos in Himachal: Roads Blocked, Water Disrupted, 137 Dead (Image Source: ChatGPT)
Himachal Pradesh is facing severe damage due to continuous monsoon rains. In the last 24 hours, 311 roads have been blocked, 221 water supply systems affected, and 65 power transformers damaged across the state, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).
As per the latest update from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), shared at 10:00 AM on Thursday, National Highway-70 remains closed in Mandi district after heavy rainfall triggered landslides. Among the worst-hit areas are the districts of Kullu, Mandi, and Chamba. Mandi alone has reported 184 road blockages due to rain-related destruction. Landslides and debris have made travel extremely difficult in many places.
The total number of deaths linked to the monsoon has now reached 137. Out of these, 77 people died directly due to rain-related disasters like house collapses, landslides, and flash floods. Another 60 people lost their lives in road accidents that were made worse by bad weather. Restoration work is ongoing in the affected regions. While some areas have seen slight improvements, new damage continues to be reported. The constant rain is testing the strength of roads, power systems, and public infrastructure.
Officials have advised people to stay away from danger zones and avoid unnecessary travel. They are also urging the public to follow instructions from local authorities for their own safety. Disaster teams are closely watching the situation across the state.
On July 23, Congress MLA Anuradha Rana raised concerns about the flood situation in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti. She appealed to the state government to release a special flood relief package for the district, saying the current aid was not enough. Rana, who represents Lahaul-Spiti in the state assembly, also warned tourists to check weather reports and official notices before visiting the area. Many remote parts of the district are at higher risk during this season.
Speaking in Shimla to the media, Rana said she planned to meet the Chief Minister to request an increase in compensation for those who have suffered losses. “Our tribal region has received very little support during past disasters,” she said. “The current compensation is too low and unfair. I will meet the Chief Minister today and ask him to raise the support amount so people get the help they truly need.
