A second-year MBA student from IIM-Calcutta has been arrested after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted inside the boys’ hostel of the premier institute. However, the case took a surprising turn when her father denied the allegations, saying that his daughter was “fine and resting”.

Woman Files Complaint of Assault

The woman, who works as a psychological counsellor, visited Haridevpur police station on Friday evening. In her handwritten statement, she said that a student from the institute had called her to his hostel room. She said he offered her pizza and water. Soon after eating, she started feeling unwell and later lost consciousness. When she woke up, she realised she had been sexually assaulted and tortured.

The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under serious charges, including rape and giving harmful substances. The accused student, who is from Karnataka and studying in his second year of the MBA programme, was arrested later that night from his hostel.

Father Rejects Daughter’s Allegations

In a surprising twist, the woman’s father told reporters the next day that no such crime had occurred. He said his daughter had not been assaulted and that she was “resting and doing fine”. He also said she didn’t know the arrested student. According to him, he was informed that she had fallen from an auto-rickshaw and had fainted. She was found at the SSKM Hospital’s neurology department when he arrived.

Police Continue Investigation Despite Contradictions

Even with the father’s statements, police officials said they would continue with the case, as the complaint had been filed by the woman herself. A police source confirmed she first went to Thakurpukur police station but was later taken to Haridevpur, the correct jurisdiction for the IIM campus.

What Happened in Court

In court, police said the student invited the woman for counselling but allegedly drugged her and forced himself on her. They added that evidence was collected, including his clothes and phone. Based on new findings, more charges were added, including wrongful confinement, physical harm, and assault. The accused is now in police custody for seven days as the investigation continues.
