Shocking Twist in IIM Calcutta Rape Case (Social Media)

National News: The alleged rape case that came to light on Friday at India's prestigious management institute, IIM Calcutta, suddenly took a new turn on Saturday. While the 24-year-old woman had filed a complaint against a student of the institute, accusing him of sexual assault, the very next day her father flatly denied the allegations. He claimed that his daughter was not raped but had fallen from an auto-rickshaw and sustained injuries. He also alleged that the police registered the case under pressure and that his daughter had no connection with the accused student.

What is the Matter?

On Friday evening, the woman lodged a complaint at Haridevpur Police Station in Kolkata, stating that student Parmanand Jain, alias Mahavir Toppannavar, had called her to the boys' hostel on the pretext of a counseling session. She alleged that there she was given a drink and pizza, after which she lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, she found indications that she had been sexually assaulted. She also claimed that the accused threatened her: “If you tell anyone, you will face dire consequences.”

Father's Statement Turns the Story Around

The victim’s father’s statement the following day changed the direction of the case. Speaking to Aaj Tak, he said, “I spoke to my daughter. She said no one misbehaved with her. She had just gone to submit a document. On the way, she fell from an auto-rickshaw and got injured. The police filed the case without thoroughly verifying the facts. He also mentioned that he received a call around 9:34 PM, informing him that his daughter had been found unconscious and was admitted to the neurology department of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

Accused in Police Custody

Parmanand Jain, a resident of Balikote, Karnataka, was detained from the IIM Calcutta hostel late Friday night. He was presented before the court on Saturday and sent to police custody till July 19. Police said that medical reports and forensic examination of the alleged crime scene are underway to ascertain the facts.

Psychologist, Social Media Connection, and Uncertainty

The woman is said to be a professional psychologist and reportedly came in contact with the accused through an online platform. Their meeting was arranged under the pretext of a counseling session. The case has taken a complex turn, as serious allegations from the woman contrast sharply with her family’s denial, leading investigating agencies to consider both possibilities—deception or conspiracy.

Many Questions, Incomplete Answers

  • Is the woman under pressure to retract her statement?
  • Did the police act hastily while registering the FIR?
  • Is this a case of misunderstanding or part of a larger conspiracy?

Police Investigation Continues

Senior officials from Kolkata Police confirmed that the case is being investigated from all possible angles. They are examining CCTV footage, medical reports, digital communication records, and statements from both sides. The IIM Calcutta administration also issued a statement saying they are “Taking the matter very seriously and fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies.”

This case highlights once again that in serious allegations like sexual assault, a thorough and unbiased investigation is essential—so that the innocent are protected and the guilty are held accountable.
