New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, which aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between New Delhi and Ottawa, with discussions set to focus on trade, energy and artificial intelligence (AI), and attempt to reset ties after a turbulent past.

Canadian PM Carney's visit to India began on February 28, in Mumbai, where he addressed business leaders before travelling to the national capital, and the delegation called it a “historic” trip.

What did PM Modi say?

During the joint press statement with Mark Carney in New Delhi on Monday, PM Modi said that "Today new partnerships between several universities in AI, healthcare, agriculture, and innovation are being announced."

"People-to-people ties are the driving force behind our relationship. Today, we have taken several important decisions to further strengthen them. New partnerships between several universities in AI, healthcare, agriculture, and innovation are being announced. We also agreed on Canadian universities opening campuses in India. Indigenous and tribal communities are an important part of our shared cultural heritage. An MoU was signed today between the two sides to enhance cultural exchange," PM Modi said.

PM Modi also said that the two countries aim to further deepen their economic cooperation with the goal to reach $50 billion in trade by 2030.

"Today, we discussed transforming this vision into a next-level partnership. Our goal is to reach $50 billion in trade by 2030. Unlocking the full potential of economic cooperation is our priority. Therefore, we have decided to finalize a comprehensive economic partnership agreement soon", PM Modi said.

Sharing why Canada is important partner, PM Narendra Modi said, "Canada is an important partner for India in the Indo-Pacific. We welcome their interest in becoming a dialogue partner in the Indian Ocean Rim Association. This will add new depth to our maritime cooperation. We agree that terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation pose common and serious challenges not only to both countries but to all humanity. Our close cooperation against these is crucial for global peace and stability."

Did PM Modi talk about West Asia situation?

While talking about the current situation in West Asia, PM Modi said, "India's position on the many ongoing tensions in the world is clear. We have always called for maintaining peace and stability, and when two democracies stand together, the voice for peace becomes even stronger. The current situation in West Asia is a matter of deep concern for us. India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. We will continue to work closely with all countries to ensure the safety of all Indian citizens in the region."

What did Canadian PM say?

While sharing his thoughts about India-Canada partnership, Mark Carney during the joint press statement said that, "There has been more engagement between the Canadian and Indian governments in the last year than there has been in more than two decades combined. This is not merely the renewal of a relationship. It is the expansion of a valued partnership with new ambition, focus, and foresight. A partnership between two confident countries charting our own course for the future."

Did Carney praise PM Modi?

While crediting PM Modi for India becoming the fastest growing economy in the world, Canadian PM said, "Per capita incomes in this country have risen at a pace never seen in history."

"In the last decade, under your leadership Prime Minister, India has become the fastest growing economy in the world. Per capita incomes in this country have risen at a pace never seen in history, seldom in human history... Canada shares your ambition and your sense of purpose," he said.

Carney also praised India's  G20 presidency in 2023, stating that, "I believe the prescription for success in this new era is well exemplified by the theme of your G20 presidency in 2023, which I had the honour of attending. That theme, of course, ‘One earth, One family, One future’, because the challenges of our age cannot be solved by one country alone."

Did Carney talk about doubling Canada's grid by 2050?

While talking about partnership and growth, Canadian PM said, "Today we are launching a strategic energy partnership with significant potential to expand bilateral energy trade... We're deepening our cooperation in clean energy, expanding collaboration across wind, solar, and hydrogen because Canada has big plans as well. We plan to double our grid by 2050 and India can be a major partner in this expansion... All of these agreements under one planet are beginning of a new prosperous relationship that will offer generational opportunities for workers and businesses in both their countries and which will protect the planet for future generations."

The meeting came amid heightened global tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
