New Delhi: Three Indian sailors have died in an attack during US Navy operations in the Gulf region. The government of India has expressed strong protest against this incident. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed India's deep concern and displeasure while speaking to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio over phone. He also gave this information on social media. Earlier, the Foreign Ministry had summoned the American diplomat in New Delhi and registered its protest. MEA described the incident as "extremely worrying" and took up the matter strongly with the US.

Where and how did the attack take place?

Palau country's oil tanker 'MT Setebello' was targeted near the coast of Oman. There were a total of 24 Indian crew members on board the ship. Three sailors died in the attack, while 21 were rescued safely. This attack took place during a US Navy operation, regarding which many questions are being raised.

Who were the sailors killed?

The dead have been identified. These three were deployed on duty: Deck Cadet Aditya Sharma Engine Fitter Shivanand Chaurasia Chief Engineer Patnala Suresh All three were hardworking and the sole support of their families. There is a wave of mourning not only in the family but in the entire country due to his death.

What did the international community say?

The United Nations and International Maritime Organization IMO also expressed concern over this incident. IMO said that it is the shared responsibility of all countries to ensure the safety of ships and sailors at sea. If sea routes are not safe, the supply chain of the entire world gets shaken. UNO also condemned activities that threaten maritime security.

What steps is the Indian government taking now?

The government has taken immediate action. All concerned agencies have been put on high alert. Continuous coordination is going on with the Indian Navy and international maritime authorities to ensure the safety of the remaining crew.

The Ministry of External Affairs has clearly said that dialogue and diplomatic efforts are most important to restore peace and stability in the Gulf region. India has demanded from America that this attack should be thoroughly investigated, the facts should be made public and responsibility should be fixed.

Till now, it is not clear who was behind the attack. But India has made it clear that there will be no compromise on the security of its citizens. The government is in touch with the families of the victims and has assured them of all possible help.
