India Slams Pakistan At UN Over 'fabricating Imaginative Tales Of Islamophobia'

New Delhi: India on Monday launched a sharp attack on Pakistan, accusing it of spreading false claims of Islamophobia and targeting the New Delhi through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and denounced Pakistani strikes on neighbouring Afghanistan during the month of Ramadan.

What did the Indian Envoy to UN say?

While speaking at the United Nations General Assembly marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, India’s Permanent Representative Parvathaneni Harish said that "India strongly condemns all forms of violence and hatred committed in the name of any religion."

"India’s western neighbour is an excellent example of fabricating imaginative tales of Islamophobia in their neighbourhood," he said.

During the session, India delivered a strong response to Pakistan's attempts to politicize religious issues. 

Parvathaneni Harish also flagged rising misinformation, rejected what he called false allegations, and pushed for a stronger UN focus on inclusive societies, religious harmony and credible global narratives.

"I stress that it is important for the UN to take note of the rising trend and dangers of weaponising religious identity and instrumentalising it to serve narrow political ends," he said.

Did Parvathaneni talk about Afghanistan?

India has strongly condemned Pakistan's air strikes on Afghanistan that caused multiple civilian deaths during Ramadan

"One wonders what would brutal repression of Ahmadiyyas in this country be termed, or the large-scale refoulement of the helpless Afghans or air-bombing campaigns in this Holy Month of Ramadan?… The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which our western neighbour has systematically attempted to weaponise against India, has, repeatedly made false and baseless allegations against my country," said Harish.

India accused Pakistan of using religious identity as a political weapon. India stated that Pakistan often fabricates stories of Islamophobia to create a negative atmosphere in international forums.

Harish, asked in a question at the UNGA whether issues such as the repression against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan, the large-scale forced return of helpless Afghans, and the aerial bombardment during the holy month of Ramadan should not also be included in these discussions. 

What did Parvathaneni say about muslims?

Parvathaneni also pointed out that India is home to over 200 million Muslims, one of the largest Muslim populations in the world.

“Muslims in India, including those in Jammu and Kashmir, elect their own representatives to speak for them. The only “phobia" evident here appears to be directed against the multicultural and peaceful coexistence that all communities in India enjoy, including Muslim communities," said Harish at the UN.
