New Delhi: India on Wednesday has welcomed the recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran and expressed hope that it will pave the way for lasting peace in West Asia.

What did the government say?

The government's first reaction came after the US-Iran ceasefire was announced.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said that "We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict."

What was there in the statement?

The Ministry's statement also highlighted the conflict’s impact on global trade and energy supply, stating that it has caused "immense suffering" and also disrupted the global energy supplies.

India has also urged that the Strait of Hormuz remain open to ensure unhindered movement of goods and energy resources.

“The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz,” the MEA said in the statement.

The MEA emphasised that diplomacy remains crucial in achieving early and sustainable peace in West Asia.
