New Delhi: Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George on Monday night strongly reacted to the female Norwegian journalist who repeatedly 'harassed' Indian diplomats during the press conference in Norway. The female journalist's questions created a bit of an awkward situation during the press conference.

What did the Norwegian journalist say?

The female Norwegian journalist asked Indian diplomats, 'Why should India be trusted on issues like freedom of press, minority rights and human rights?' Responding strongly to this question, George defended India's democratic structure and accused critics of forming their opinions based on selective reports of 'ignorant NGOs' without understanding the vast size and complexities of the country.

Was there a heated argument?

The heated debate escalated when the journalist, who had briefly walked out during the conversation, questioned why India should be "trusted" on issues like press freedom, minority rights, and human rights. Responding strongly, George defended India's democratic structure and accused critics of forming opinions based on selective reports from "ignorant NGOs" without understanding the country's vast scale and complexities.

What did MEA say about TV Channels?

Responding to the questions, George said critics did not fully understand India’s media landscape and scale.

“You know how many stories are up here [in India]. We have a lot of breaking news coming every day in the evening. At least 200 TV channels in Delhi alone, in English, Hindi and multiple languages. People have no understanding of the scale of India,” he said.

“They (India's critics) read one or two news reports published by some godforsaken, ignorant NGOs and then come and ask questions,” the senior diplomat added.

Were Democratic institutions also mentioned?

George also referred to India's constitutional provisions and democratic institutions in response to the allegations made during the briefing. He stated that the Indian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens and provides legal remedies in the event of rights violations.
