New Delhi: Is the threat of Ebola on the rise in India as well? The Union Health Ministry has stepped up surveillance in response to this concern. India has taken this step as a precautionary measure in light of recent Ebola outbreaks in parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. Under this initiative, surveillance and preparedness measures are being strengthened across the entire public health infrastructure. Official sources provided this information on Monday. They stated that the Union Health Ministry is keeping a close watch on the developments following the World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of this outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Have Officials Reviewed the Situation?

According to sources, senior officials from the Union Health Ministry—including representatives from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and other relevant departments—have reviewed the situation and initiated precautionary public health measures. A senior official from the Health Ministry clarified that no case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain has been reported in India, and the current risk to the country remains minimal.

What are Measures Being Adopted?

The official explained that, as a precautionary measure, surveillance and preparedness protocols are being reinforced at points of entry and within the public health system to ensure the early detection of—and a rapid response to—any suspected cases. According to sources, key measures include reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to screening, surveillance, and disease management, while the preparedness of laboratories is also being bolstered.

What are Measures at Airports?

According to reports, the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has been designated for testing purposes, and other laboratories are being brought on board in a phased manner. Officials noted that coordination with relevant ministries and agencies is also being enhanced to monitor international travel from affected regions. Furthermore, officials are implementing precautionary measures at major airports and seaports across the country.

What was the Ministry's appeal for the public?

The Ministry has urged the public and the media not to spread panic or circulate unverified information. The Ministry has provided assurances that India's public health system remains vigilant and is fully prepared to handle any emerging situation. Citizens have been advised to adhere to the official advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization (WHO). Sources indicated that the government will maintain close coordination with international health authorities and take all necessary measures to safeguard public health.
