National New: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from his post on 21 July 2025, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. His move has created a stir in political circles. He wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu and announced his resignation with immediate effect, citing health reasons. His term was till August 2027, but resigning two years earlier has raised many questions.
Dhankhar's resignation shocked the political world, as in a public event on July 11, 2025, he had made it clear that he would complete his term and retire in 2027. This statement was given just 11 days before his resignation, due to which discussions intensified about the possibilities of other reasons behind his sudden resignation. Earlier in March 2025, he complained of chest pain on the issue of his health, after which he was admitted to AIIMS hospital. Apart from this, his health deteriorated once again during a program in Uttarakhand in June 2025.
Dhankhar was chosen as the candidate for the post of vice president by the NDA government in 2022. In the election held on 6 August 2022, he defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin. Dhankhar got 528 votes, while Alva could get only 182 votes. After this, on 10 August 2022, he took oath as the 14th Vice President of India. His tenure was scheduled till 2027, but his sudden resignation has raised many questions in political circles.
citing health reasons
Dhankhar cited health reasons in his resignation and expressed his gratitude to the president, prime minister, and the cabinet in his letter. His move was unexpected for the post of vice president of the country, as he still had more than two years left in his term. His move can be understood considering the priority of health, but political analysts are discussing it from different perspectives.
After Dhankhar's resignation, other opposition parties, including Congress, have raised questions. Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain said that this is surprising because he was active in Parliament till yesterday. At the same time, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also raised the question that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders neither wished him nor thanked him, which indicates that there may be some other big political development behind this.
Jagdeep Dhankhar is the third Vice President of India who did not complete his term. Earlier in 1969, V. V. Giri resigned to contest the presidential election, and in 2002, Krishan Kant's term ended due to his death.
Just hours before resigning, Dhankhar conducted the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha and appealed to reduce political confrontation in the House. His move was shocking, and now the question arises whether his health is the real reason or there are some other incidents behind it, which may be revealed in the future.
Dhankhar's resignation has created a vacancy in the post of vice president. Now the Election Commission will start the process of electing a new vice president. There is a lot of discussion about this process in political and government circles, and it will be interesting to see which new political personality occupies this post in the future.
