The snowfall began in the higher altitudes early in the day, with the plains, notably Srinagar, receiving snow later in the afternoon. Officials recorded approximately three inches of snow in Srinagar city alone.Additionally, the season&#39s first snowfall was noted in several districts, including Ganderbal, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama.The renowned ski resort of Gulmarg, along with tourist hotspots like Sonamarg and Pahalgam, also saw snowfall. Areas such as Gurez, Zojila axis, Sadhna Top, Mughal Road, and various locations within Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts were similarly affected.Traffic Chaos and Government ResponseThe heavy snowfall resulted in the closure of crucial routes such as the Srinagar-Leh Highway and Mughal Road. Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was severely impacted, leaving around 2,000 vehicles stranded. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reported on social media about his experience driving from Jammu to Srinagar under treacherous conditions.He noted that his office was coordinating with local administrations to address the situation.I drove from Jammu to Srinagar today. In Himachal Pradesh, around 5,000 tourists stranded at Solang Nala were rescued by police amid heavy snowfall. The Kullu police initiated a rescue operation after approximately 1,000 vehicles were immobilized due to the snow.Due to fresh snowfall today on 27.12.2024, about 1000 tourists and other vehicles were stuck in Solang Nala, Kullu police reported on X. They confirmed that all stranded tourists had been safely evacuated.The IMD has issued an orange alert for snowfall and cold waves across six districts in Himachal Pradesh for December 27 and 28. Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution due to potential road blockages and disruptions.
