Violant Clash at JNU: A violent clash broke out between two student groups during the 'Visarjan Shobha Yatra' organized to mark Vijayadashami at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday. The incident occurred after the nine-day Navratri celebrations.
JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) Joint Secretary Vaibhav Meena stated that the student union had organized a symbolic 'Ravan Dahan' (burning of the idols) against "Naxal-like forces." In this, photographs and effigies of alleged Naxal ideologies like Afzal Guru, Umar Khalid, Sayer Imam, Ji Sai Baba and Charu Majumdar were burnt.
Meena said that when the Shobha Yatra was being taken out at the campus, members of the Left groups at the Sabarmati tea point obstructed the journey and threw shoes and slippers at the participants. Due to this, some students involved in the journey were injured.
Vaibhav Meena said that he will file a police complaint in this case. At the same time, JNUSU President Nitish Kumar alleged that the clash started with a provocative poster, in which Omar Khalid and Smasle Imam were shown as Ravana. He called it an act against the Constitution and human rights defenders and said that his group protested at Sabarmati T-Point and formed a human chain to stop the violence.
Slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Yogi ji's bulldozer justice' were also raised during the Shobha Yatra. The situation remained under control despite the increased tension between the two sides. The incident highlights ideological differences and conflicts on the JNU campus.
