Thrissur: A heart-wrenching accident happened in Kerala late on Friday night. On National Highway-66, a speeding car rammed into a lorry parked on the roadside. The collision was so strong that the car was blown to pieces. 8 people lost their lives in this accident. Seven died on the spot, one died in the hospital. The accident took place at Panampikkunnu near Kaipamangalam at around 11:40 pm.

How did the car collide with the lorry?

It is said that work is going on on the highway. For this reason the lorry was standing on the road in the same lane. The car with Tamil Nadu number was going from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur. The speed was high and in the darkness the driver probably did not see the parked lorry. The car went straight into the lorry. The front part was completely flattened. Hearing the sound, people nearby came running and informed the police.

Who was in the car?

According to the police, all the people who died were in the car. Initial investigation has revealed that all of them were students and had come from Tamil Nadu to visit Kerala. An I-card of PSNA Engineering College, Dindigul has also been recovered from the spot. From this it is being speculated that all may be students of the same college. However, the police are still trying to identify everyone and are contacting their families.

How did the rescue team manage to escape?

The scene after the accident was very horrifying. The car was completely rammed into the lorry, people were trapped inside. Local people tried first but it did not work. Then police and fire brigade teams came. The car had to be cut with a gas cutter and only then could the people trapped inside be taken out. Two people were still breathing and were immediately taken to the hospital but one could not be saved.

Now what is happening in the investigation?

Police have registered the case. Two things are being investigated. First- What was the speed of the car? Second- If work was going on on the highway, were there barricades, lights or warning boards installed there or not? It has often been seen that security arrangements at construction sites are not complete and vehicles parked at night become the cause of accidents.

At present, all 8 bodies have been kept in the mortuary of Thrissur Medical College. Police say that the bodies will be handed over to the relatives after post-mortem. This accident has once again raised questions on the security arrangements on the highway at night.
