Kolkata: CBI widens probe, questions junior doctor over rape-murder case

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Saturday, another doctor, Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, reportedly close to the former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was summoned for questioning.

Dr. Biswas, who was recently transferred from Burdwan Medical College to Kakdwip Hospital in South 24 Parganas by the West Bengal government, appeared at the CBI office in Salt Lake, Kolkata. According to the agency, he is being questioned regarding his presence at RG Kar Medical College on the day of the crime, despite no official engagement. A CBI officer stated, “He is being questioned about his presence at the RG Kar Hospital on August 9 despite having no engagement.”

Allegations of the 'North Bengal Lobby'

Dr. Biswas is allegedly part of the 'North Bengal lobby' – a group of medical professionals accused of intimidating students at various government-run medical colleges. He, along with two other doctors, Avik De and Ranjit Saha, has been named in an FIR for allegedly threatening students. The three have been booked under Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for "making gestures or preparations to cause someone to believe they are about to be subjected to criminal force."
