5.4-Magnitude Earthquake In Bangladesh Sends Tremors Across Kolkata

Kolkata: A massive earthquake was felt in Kolkata at around 1.22 pm on Friday afternoon. After this, people got scared and came out of their homes. This shock was of 5.4 intensity. Its center was about 100 kilometers away from Kolkata and its depth was 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt at many places in the city. 

How intense was the blow?

The intensity of the earthquake was measured at around 5.4 on the Richter scale. It was an earthquake of medium intensity. Tremors were felt for a long time in Kolkata. Due to this, slight cracks appeared in many buildings of Kolkata and nearby cities.

Where was the earthquake felt?

According to reports, apart from Kolkata, earthquake tremors were also felt in Howrah, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas. Tremors were felt in many districts of South Bengal. At some places people came down from the rooftops. At the same time, there was chaos in traffic at many places.

Was there any damage done?

No major damage or death has been reported due to the earthquake yet. Cracks appeared in some old buildings. No major collapse has been reported. The administration has started investigations in many areas. People are being appealed to remain alert.

Where was the epicenter of the earthquake?

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Bay of Bengal, which is 100 kilometers away from Kolkata. Due to less depth the earthquake was felt more. NCS said that aftershocks may occur. Therefore, there is no need for people to panic, they should just remain alert.

How did people react?

Videos are going viral on social media after the earthquake. People came out of their homes and were on the streets. Many students and people left the school and office out of fear. The administration appealed to the people to maintain peace.

What did the administration do?

Fire brigade and police are on alert. NDRF team was kept ready. Children were taken out of schools. Buildings were inspected at many places.

What are the possibilities ahead?

At present there is a possibility of aftershocks. People were asked to remain alert. Seismologists said this is normal. Such shocks keep occurring in the Bay of Bengal.

There are more old buildings in Kolkata. There is danger in coming to the earthquake zone, due to which fear has spread among the people. The administration started relief work. This shock has come in Kolkata after a long time. People have become alert now. The administration said that the situation is under control.
