West Bengal News: A police officer stationed at Kolkata's Park Street Police Station has been accused of molesting a woman civic volunteer on duty. According to the victim, Sub-Inspector Abhishek Roy attempted to make inappropriate advances toward her on the night of October 4. The woman alleged that Roy, who appeared intoxicated, called her into the restroom at around 1:10 am, offering her a salwar suit as a gift for Durga Puja, before touching her inappropriately.

The woman resisted the officer's advances, but Roy allegedly tried to use force. She also mentioned that Roy had made a similar, unwanted advance on September 25, which she initially chose not to report. The victim informed the duty officer of the incident, but he allegedly dismissed her complaint and suggested settling the matter verbally. The woman’s brother arrived at the station to assist her and was also discouraged from filing a formal complaint.

Kolkata police takes action after issue escalated

The woman later escalated the issue by sending copies of her complaint to senior officials, including the West Bengal Home Secretary and the Commissioner of Police. An investigation was launched, and an FIR was filed under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for using criminal force with the intent to outrage a woman’s modesty.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Priyobroto Roy, confirmed that the accused officer has been relieved of his duties while the investigation is ongoing. The police are also examining CCTV footage from the station and investigating the actions of the duty officer at the time.
